CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

Please read carefully prior to submitting entry.

  1. The National 2009 "Do it with Denim" Jeans for Genes Design Awards is a competition of skill open to all budding designers Australia wide.  
  2. All garments entered into the competition MUST be created using denim jeans (vintage or new) and each finished garment must be "wearable and saleable".
  3. There is no limit to the number of jeans incorporated into each design.
  4. It is allowable to incorporate up to 20% of another fabric into the design (not including linings).
  5. However, please note, that a garment made totally out of denim fabric (by the roll) will be disqualified.
  6. There is no limit to the number of entries per person.
  7. Each garment is to be created using the theme "Discoveries".  This is also the theme for Jeans for Genes in 2009 based around the Children's Medical Research Institute's commitment to unlocking the mysteries of disease.  Inspiration may come from a person, icon or a past discovery or even what may be a future discovery.  This theme is NOT restricted to discoveries in medical research and therefore the scope for possible ideas and inspiration is enormous. 
  8. The created design can be embellished with sequins, beads and other trimmings and can be bleached or dyed etc.
  9. If a purchased t-shirt or shirt is included to compliment the re-designed garment it must be stipulated that the top is not for judging.
  10. The concept is to re-design jeans into a different garment (skirt, dress, evening wear) or transform a pair of jeans with a "new look".
  11. Branding ("labelled" tags and or buttons etc) must not be visible on the finished garment.
  12. The finished garment/s must be women's size 10-12 or men's size 32"-34" waist.
  13. "Do it with Denim" can be incorporated as part of the Fashion Design Course at the discretion of the course co-coordinator or as an extra curricular activity by the participating student.
  14. Each registration form must be accompanied by a $25 (registration/handling fee) to be paid online when registering.  Registration can be completed anytime
  15. Entries must be submitted by uploading 4 x photos of the garment anytime between 2nd March and 12th June 2009.  The $25 registration fee must be paid before you can submit your photos. 

JUDGING

  1. All entered garments must be completed by June 12th, 2009.
  2. Each entrant is to arrange to have their garment photographed.
  3. Photographs must be digital and in jpeg/gif format and no larger than 500kb each (keep within 800 x 600 pixels if possible).
  4. 4x photographs are to be submitted online for judging by uploading the photos at www.doitwithdenim.org.au. Front View (full length) Back View (full length) plus 2x shots emphasizing detail in relation to the theme and design features of the garment.
  5. The student must complete a thorough description of the garment and chosen "Discoveries" used as inspiration in their design.
  6. Digital photographs only will be accepted for judging.
  7. "Do It With Denim" is not a photographic competition therefore professional photography is not required.  Although please note that the clearer the photographs and the better the detail in them, the better the judges will be able to score them appropriately.
  8. All entered photographs will remain the property of the organisers.
  9. All photographs to be lodged online, no later than Friday June 12, at www.doitwithdenim.org.au.
  10. Of the entries received 1 in every 4 will be chosen from each State as Semi-Finalists.
  11. The successful semi-finalists will be announced online at www.doitwithdenim.org.au by June 19, 2009.
  12. Each selected Semi- Finalist will receive a "Do It With Denim Jeans for Genes Design Awards" Certificate.
  13. The photographs of the selected Semi-Finalists' garments will be judged with at least 1 x State/Territory Finalist selected from each State (unless there is less than 2 entries from a State/Territory) and 16 State Finalists selected in total nationally.
  14. The State/Territory Finalists will be announced online at www.doitwithdenim.org.au by June 26, 2009.
  15. All garments selected as State/Territory Finalists are to be sent by Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 to:

  16. Each State/Territory Finalist will receive prizes of over $500 in value.
  17. The judging panel will consist of representatives of the fashion design industry, representatives of the fashion retail industry, representatives of the fashion media and "Do It With Denim" sponsors. Refer to Judges' Profiles on this website.

NATIONAL JUDGING

  1. The selected State/Territory Finalists' garments are to be sent to Sydney to participate in the "Do It With Denim" National Final in a fully choreographed Fashion Show staged as a highlight of the 2009 Jeans for Genes Art Auction Event.
  2. This high profile Jeans for Genes signature annual event will be staged at The Pavillion, Australian Jockey Club, Randwick on a date to be advised.
  3. A National Winner will be selected from the State/Territory Finalists and announced at the Jeans for Genes Art Auction Event.
  4. The National Winner will receive prizes and opportunities valued at over $TBA.
  5. At each stage of the competition the judges' decision is final and no correspondence whatsoever will be entered into.
  6. National magazine promotion will (at the discretion of the editor) feature a number of the entered garments.
  7. Photographs and garments entered into the "Do it with Denim" competition may (without advice) be used by the Children's Medical Research Institute to promote the Jeans for Genes Competition.
  8. All garments selected as finalists will be returned to the designer by September 15 2009.

ADDITIONAL CLAUSE:

Prize winner's air travel and accommodation dates will align with the AFW in Sydney which is yet to be scheduled in 2010 - Confirmation of the date will be advised when the prize winners are notified.

The National Winner's air travel to Sydney will be from the designer's nearest Capital City.

If the Winner is a resident of NSW the accommodation component still applies but air travel is not included.

Air Travel is subject to advance booking and is non transferable or redeemable for cash.

You will be advised by the Do It With Denim Event Consultant as to which shopping centres will be involved in the exhibitions for 2009.
