DESIGN BRIEF

2009 Do It With Denim Jeans for Genes Design Awards:

Theme: The theme for Jeans for Genes in 2009 will be based around the Children’s Medical Research Institute’s commitment to unlocking the mysteries of disease – “Discoveries”. Inspiration may come from a person, icon or a past discovery or even what may be a future discovery. This theme is NOT restricted to discoveries in medical research and therefore the scope for possible ideas and inspiration is enormous.

Aim: The aim of this competition is for budding designers to create a new garment or furnishing item from old denim jeans. These items are then judged by professionals from the fashion and interior design fields. Exhibitions are held throughout Australia to promote the work of Australia’s up and coming designers as well as help promote Jeans for Genes Day, the major fundraiser of the Children’s Medical Research Institute and the important work they do. This is a fabulously unique competition and in 2009 will be in its 6th year and bigger and better than ever.

Criteria: All designs must be made using at least 80% old (or new) denim jeans as the base of the design. The denim may be dyed, bleached, shredded, embroidered, painted etc. No denim off the role can be used.

Garments must be wearable and women’s size 10-12 or men’s size 32”-34”. Furnishing items must be functional.

The competition is now open to all budding designers. You do not need to be a student enrolled in a tertiary design course.

The Entry fee will be $25 and registration will commence early March 2009. Registrations will close around mid May. Keep an eye out for updates www.doitwithidenim.org.au.
