CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
Please read the below carefully prior to submitting entry.
- The National 2009 "Do it with Denim" Jeans for Genes Design Awards is a competition of skill open to all budding designers Australia wide.
- All items entered into the competition MUST be created using denim jeans (vintage or new) and each finished design must be "functional and saleable".
- There is no limit to the number of jeans incorporated into each design.
- It is allowable to incorporate up to 20% of another fabric into the fabric part of the design.
- However, please note, that a garment made totally out of denim fabric (by the roll) will be disqualified.
- There is no limit to the number of entries per designer.
- Each design is to be created using the theme "Discoveries". This is also the theme for Jeans for Genes in 2009 based around the Children's Medical Research Institute's commitment to unlocking the mysteries of disease - "Discoveries". Inspiration may come from a person, icon or past discovery or even what may be a future discovery. This theme is NOT restricted to discoveries in medical research and therefore the scope for possible ideas and inspiration is enormous!
- The created design can be embellished with sequins, beads and other trimmings and can be bleached or dyed etc.
- The concept is to design an item that could be used in the home or office that is made out of recycled jeans.
- Branding ("labelled" tags and or buttons etc) must not be visible on the finished garment.
- "Do it with Denim" can be incorporated as part of the Interior Design/Decoration, Furniture Design, Soft Furnishing or Textile Design Course at the discretion of the course co-coordinator or as an extra curricular activity by the participating student.
- Each registration form must be accompanied by a $25 (registration/handling fee) to be paid online when registering. Registration can be completed anytime
- Entries must be submitted by uploading 4 x photos of the garment anytime between 2nd March and 12th June 2009. The $25 registration fee must be paid before you can submit your photos.
JUDGING
- All entered designs must be completed by June 12th, 2009.
- Each entrant is to arrange to have their design photographed.
- Photographs must be digital and in jpeg/gif format and no larger than 500kb each (keep within 800 x 600 pixels if possible).
- 4x photographs are to be submitted online for judging by uploading the photos at www.doitwithdenim.org.au. Front View (full length) Back View (full length) plus 2x shots emphasizing detail in relation to the theme and design features of the design.
- The student must complete a thorough description of the designed item including their chosen inspiration in their design.
- Digital photographs only will be accepted for judging.
- "Do It With Denim" is not a photographic competition therefore professional photography is not required. Although please note that the clearer the photographs and the better the detail in them, the better the judges will be able to score them appropriately.
- All entered photographs will remain the property of the organisers.
- All photographs to be lodged online, no later than Friday June 12, at www.doitwithdenim.org.au.
- Of the photographs received 1 in every 4 designs will be chosen from each State as Semi-Finalists.
- The successful Semi-Finalists will be announced online at www.doitwithdenim.org.au by June 23, 2009.
- Each selected Semi- Finalist will receive a "Do It With Denim" Certificate.
- The photographs of the selected Semi-Finalists' designs will be judged and at least 1 x State/Territory Finalist will be selected from each State and 12 State Finalists selected in total nationally.
- The State/Territory Finalists will be announced online at www.doitwithdenim.org.au by June 26, 2009.
- All designs selected as State /Territory Finalists will need to be in Sydney by July 3, 2009. The Do It With Denim Event Consultant, Mary Donnelly, will arrange this with the State Finalists.
- Each State/ Territory Finalist will receive prizes of over $500 in value.
- The judging panel will consist of representatives of the interior/furniture design industry and "Do It With Denim" sponsors. The 2007 Design Judging Panel will be announced on the website.
NATIONAL JUDGING
- The selected State/Territory Finalists' designs will be organised to be sent to Sydney to participate in the "Denimstration of Design" Exhibition to be held at a Sydney venue to be confirmed. The opening of the exhibition will be launched on Friday, 26th July and the exhibition will run until Jeans for Genes Day, 7th August 2009. Invitations will be posted on this website.
- A National Winner will be selected from the State/Territory Finalists and announced at the "Denimstration of Design" Exhibition.
- The National Winner will receive prizes and opportunities valued up to $5,000.
- At each stage of the competition the judges' decision is final and no correspondence whatsoever will be entered into.
- Photographs and designs entered into the "Do it with Denim" competition may (without advice) be used by the Children's Medical Research Institute to promote the Jeans for Genes Competition.
- All designs selected as finalists will be returned to the designer by September 15, 2009.

ADDITIONAL CLAUSE:
Prize winner's air travel and accommodation dates will align with the date of the DesignEx Exhibition which is yet to be scheduled in 2010 - Confirmation of the date will be advised when the prize winners are notified.
The National Winner's air travel to Sydney will be from the designer's nearest Capital City.
If the Winner is a resident of NSW the accommodation component still applies but air travel is not included.
Air Travel is subject to advance booking and is non transferable or redeemable for cash.

There are many promotional and media opportunities planned for 2009 that will benefit the colleges, students and the Jeans for Genes campaign.
