Glynis Jones
Glynis Jones is a curator in the design & society department of the Powerhouse Museum with responsibility for the Museum’s holdings of fashion & dress, a fabulous collection comprising men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing and accessories from the 18th century to the present, fashion plates and swatchbooks, designer and manufacturer’s archives including Berlei, Speedo, Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson and performance costume from the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. She also initiated a program of documenting Australian subcultural and alternative style through photography and filmed oral histories.
In 2006 Glynis developed the very popular online Electronic Swatchbook project, a public domain archive of high resolution images of fabric swatches from the Museum’s collection. Over 900 swatches have been made available in digital form to be used freely by fashion and textile designers, graphic designers and students.
Glynis has curated a number of exhibitions including Australians meet Diana (2007) Sourcing the Muse (2002), Costumes from the opening ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, (2000) the annual Student Fashion display (1993-2008), Fashion of the Year, Nineties to Now (2004 ). She had also curated aspects of the following exhibitions: Fashion from Fleece: 200 years of Australian wool in fashion (2007), Smartworks : design and the Handmade, (2006), Inspired, design across time (2005), Christian Dior, the art of fashion (1994), Absolutely Mardi Gras (1995) The Australian Dream (1993) A Material World (1990), Australian fashion: the contemporary art (1989)
She has contributed to a various publications including Smartworks: Design and the handmade (Powerhouse Publishing 2007), Dressing from the Inside, subcultural and alternative style in Australia, 14th International Oral History Conference papers, 2006, Yesterday’s Tomorrows, The Powerhouse Museum and its precursors 1880-2005 (Powerhouse Publishing in association with UNSW Press 2005.), Absolutely Mardi Gras (Powerhouse Publishing 1996), Australian Fashion: the contemporary art (Bernard Leser Publications 1989), Decorative arts and design from the Powerhouse Museum (Powerhouse Publishing 1991), A Material World (Powerhouse Publishing 1990).
Glynis provides lectures, tours and talks on aspects of the Museum fashion and dress collection.
