BACKGROUND ON DO IT WITH DENIM JEANS FOR GENES DESIGN AWARDS

Do It With Denim Design Awards, now in its 6th year, is helping to raise further awareness of Jeans for Genes Day.

The Do It With Denim competition is one of skill, held to encourage up and coming fashion designers to achieve recognition for their work and to provide a way in which to support the Jeans for Genes Day Campaign for the Children’s Medical Research Institute on a national level.

The Theme for 2009:

The theme for the 2009 Jeans for Genes Day Campaign will be “Discoveries”  This is based on the Children's Medical Research Institute's commitment to unlocking the mysteries of disease.  Inspiration may come from a person, icon or a past discovery or even what may be a future discovery.  This theme is NOT restricted to disoveries in medical research and therefore the scope for possible ideas and inspiration is enormous.

The Criteria

The criteria for the competition in all categories is that the finished design has to be created out of old (or new) jeans and wearable and saleable (fashion) and for the design entries it must be functional and saleable.

Prizes and Exhibitions:

Prizes will be given to all State-finalists of approximately $500 in value with the National Winners receiving prizes worth $1,000s.

The State-Finalist garments were modeled in a fully choreographed fashion show as part of the Jeans for Genes Celebrity Art Auction in July 2008 which was very successful.  The National Winner was announced at the Jeans for Genes Denim Gold Ball and Art Auction.  We will do the same again in 2009.

Each year, selected designed garments are displayed in shopping centres around Australia which produces many promotional opportunities for Jeans for Genes, the entrants and the shopping centres involved.
